The New Album Update
I'm nearly done recording the 1st half of my new album. As a quick reminder my new record is going to come out in two smaller pieces. The 1st EP will have 6 songs on it. The track listing is Next Saturday Night, Red Wine, Avalanche, That is Now, Go to Bed Angry, Me & the Chemicals. In case you're wondering, Porcelain & Beat of Your Heart will be on the 2nd EP that will come out next year. The 1st EP contains songs that chronicle the life of a musician who starts off carefree & making music before becoming a lawyer who represents abused children. This EP starts lighthearted & ends with a sense of pressure & tension. Then next year, the 2nd EP will resolve the story.
Every song represents a mood or memory that I've experienced but not every song is 100% autobiographical. Red Wine is about how my wife & I fell in love before getting married. Next Saturday Night is about the freewheeling fun a single musician can have, but it's not about me, exactly. That is Now is a song I wrote with my songwriting partner Jeff Koy about the struggles that youth in the foster-care system fight against every day. It's about how they are often judged by everyone around them before they are ever given a voice. Again, not about me, but about some of the people I've known. Jeff was my legal mentor & is now the lead guitarist in the Zak Sloan Band. If you'd like to hear more of my collaborations with Jeff check out Whisky Kiss, Red Light Paradise, & Come Get Me Smile from my album Nowhere, New Mexico.
Me & the Chemicals is about how memories & experiences can follow you for years, even when you don't want them. It's also about how I felt while representing the youth that are the subject of That is Now. Go to Bed Angry features the wonderful Anne Luna on vocals. It is a song that I'm immensely proud of. Like Next Saturday Night, it's not 100% autobiographical, it's about the struggles that a relationship faces as time goes on. For me, it was working stressful field, trying to give everything I had to my clients & not having much left when I got home. For others, relationships face different challenges.
Avalanche is it's own thing...I'll talk about it another time. It's a song that's been cooking for a long time.
I'm excited about this new double EP concept album. If you have any thoughts or about it I'd love to hear them. Shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or tweet me @Zak_Sloan.
